Chapter 4:
Return to Northrend
Difficulty: Hard Heroes: Arthas, Anub'arak Significant Items:
Ring of Protection +4, Sobi Mask, Horn of the
Clouds. Side Quests: Dragon
Hoarde |
This level is slightly easier than the
previous one, though one must still be cautious. Your main threat
is the Naga Base, which has a distinct advantage on an Island map
such as this. Once that is eliminated, the rest of the level is
easy.
Hero Development Guide: Anub'arak
will Rise to level 5 and Arthas will degrade to Level 6 on this
mission.
Anub'arak: Level 4: Level 1 Impale, Level 2 Spiked
Carapace, Level 1 Carrion Beatles, Level 1 Impale, Level 3
Spiked Carapace, Level 1 Carrion Beatles
Arthas: Level 7: Level 2 Death Coil, Level 1 Death Pact,
Level 2 Unholy Aura, Raise Dead
Level 6: Level 2 Death Coil, Level 1 Death Pact, Level 1
Unholy Aura, Raise Dead <
Arthas gradually gets weaker with each passing chapter, and it is
thankful that you get a Crypt Lord. We note that there is a bug in
the Single Player Campaign, which gives the Crypt Lord extra armor
equal to his level of Spiked Carapace whenever Anub'arak advanced
in level. Therefore... it is essential for you to get extra points
in this.
From this level onwards, the Crypt Lord becomes your tank, and
Arthas becomes the supporting caster. Arthas therefore, always
needs mana.. give him all the items to do with intelligence and
mana regeneration. Meanwhile,
give Anub'arak all Rings of Protection. He'll get over 50% damage reduction on this level.
Securing a Gold Mine:
You begin with 1 Battleship and 2 Frigates, as well as a land
based force. With these, you must secure the Goldmine at A, which
is guarded by a Blood Elf outpost. Begin by hiring a second
Battleship, you'll need 2 to make short work of their costal
defences.
Battleships are very powerful, and outrange enemy towers. Use them
to destroy all the coastal guard and cannon towers. When]
enemy archers arrive, use your 2 Frigates to kill them. Frigates do normal damage, which does 150% to these archers.
Once coastal defenses are down, bombard and destroy all those poor
spellbreakers trying to reach you. Unload your ground force. Have
the Meat Wagons attack enemy towers. Cast Raise Dead, and use the
invincible troops to engage their men. Once you destroy what's
left of their defences that try to reach your Meat Wagons. Charge
in and destroy their base. While going this, have Arthas destroy
the crates surrounding the base, they'll give you extra gold,
lumber and a few nice tomes.
Once the last enemy building is destroyed in the area, you'll be
treated to a cut-scene, and a base will be provided for you.
Arthas will lose another level and become Level 6.
Building up your Forces:
Your base starts off very limited, so you'll actually need to
teach and build stuff. We provide the build order:
- Build 2 Ziggurats, keep building more when
necessary.
- Construct a Crypt, and a Graveyard
- Get 3 Ghouls to Harvest Lumber
- Upgrade
to Halls of the Dead
- Build second Crypt.
- Start Upgrading Creature Attack/Carapace and train
Crypt Fiends
- Build a Slaughter House, maintain 3-4
Meat wagons.
- Get Temple of the Damned, build 2
Banshees.
- Upgrade to Black Citadel.
- Research Banshee Master Training.
- Maintain 8-10 Crypt Fiends, just enough so you don't
go over 50 supply.
- Upgrade Unholy Strength to
Level 3
Like the previous level, build your buildings to form an enclosure
where your Meat Wagons can be deposited.
 | | Use Crypt Fiends to binrgbring
Couatls to the ground, and make them easy bait for your Meat
Wagons behind. |
The enemy will always attack from the West of the Base. The Naga
begins with a force of 3 Myrmidons, but will later attack with
their Level 7 Naga Sea Witch, 3-4 Myrmidons, 2 Dragon Turtles, 2-3
Sirens and half a dozen Snap Dragons, In addition, they will send
aerial assault of 8-9 Couatls.
The humans land attack will be dropped via Zeppelins on the
Southwest of your base. These include 2 Glaive Throwers, a Dozen
Spell Breakers, and 3-4 Priests and Sorceresses. Their air is a
massive barrage of 10-12 Dragonhawks, who will use Cloud on your
towers.
These are all actually pretty easy to defend. Keep your Crypt
Fiends Burrowed in front of your base, this increases their
healing rate by an incredible amount. When the enemy arrives, let
them start by attacking your towers, then unburrow to quickly
eliminate their siege. By burrowing or death Coiling heavily
damaged Crypt Fiends, you usually won't lose a man. Couatls and
Dragon Hawks simply die to Crypt Fiends. Also, have your Crypt
Lord impale enemy land forces, especially the Naga Sea Witch,
who'll channel Tornado over your base. Impale disrupts
Channelling.
Defeating Sipphiron: Once you have
maxed to 50 supply, and have about 8 crypt fiends with at least
2-2 in upgrades, you're ready to take out the deadly blue Dragon
Sipphiron, he's at B. Journey up through the winding tunnels to
the North, the entrance is guarded by a Blue Drake. You can take
care of these easily with your Crypt Fiends and focus fire, just
Death Coil the Crypt Fiend that gets too damaged.
 | | Sipphiron, despite all his power,
is no match for 10 Crypt Fiends. Note the burrowed Crypt Fiend...
Burrowing is a great way to keep highly injured units
alive. |
Continue, killing more Dragons
and a Level 10 blue dragon.. same tactics. You'll pick a Sobi Mask
on the way.. give it to Arthas.
When you reach B, it's time to fight Sipphiron himself. This guys
tough, with 2750 hp. And he's got two Level 10 Blue Dragons as
body guides. Begin by killing the two Blue Dragons, while doing
this, your Crypt Fiends will get heavily damaged. Use Death Coil
to keep them alive. When Arthas cannot Death Coil fast enough,
burrow injured Crypt Fiends. Once both Dragons are dead, focus
fire and kill Sipphiron.
The reward is well worth it, a bunch of gold and tomes on the
left, and of course, the mighty Blue Dragon in undead form! With
2750 hp, 15 armor, and an attack that can deal 200hp of damage (at
fast attack speed), you've got yourself a monster! Just this
Dragon himself can take on most armies that land at your base.
Keep him alive. You also get Horn of Clouds.
During this time, you may have been attack. In each case, pull
your Crypt Lords back, deal with attack, before continuing.
Defeat of the Naga: Now your read
to build up a force to defeat the Naga, finally go to low upkeep.
Build more Meat Wagons, till you have around 8. Increase your
Crypt Fiend count to around twelve. At the same time, get 2
Statues for Healing, and complement your force with 2 Master
Banshees. Make sure your forces are at 3-3, and hire 6 Battleships
and get a 3rd Transport.
 | | You need Sipphiron to win this
battle, a Scroll of Protection helps
too. |
Note that ships do not cost
supply... therefore you should use them. Drive your ships around
to C and move your troops there. Board the transports. On the way,
your 6 Battleships will engage a frigate.. it stands no chance.
Now use the Battleships to bombard a Water Guardian on the
opposite shore, all the enemy forces will charge out, including
about 8-9 Couatls.
Rush your Transports to the opposite shore, unload the Crypt
Fiends and Heroes... but not the Meat Wagons yet! The Couatls will
be ensnared, and are then easily destroyed by the Battleships.
Everyone will focus on Sipphiron, make sure he's being continually
death coiled. Use Impale to stun their force and focus on the
enemy Royal Guards and Dragon Turtles, Once they're dead, cast
Raise Dead to get on your side!
These invincible troops do Chaos and Siege Damage, rush them into
the enemy base to deal serious carnage on their Stature of Azhura.
Their naga sea witch will come out casting Tornado, impale her and
then focus fire to kill. Unload your Meat Wagons. Proceed to kill
their base. Use Horn of the Clouds to disable their towers.
The Naga base to rebuild lost buildings, so you will need to kill
them in one strike. If the Blood Elves attack you during this,
send Sipphiron back to deal with the attack.
Transport over some acolytes and expand here. You'll get
gold!
 | | Archers are no match for the
Cannons from a Juggernaut. |
Establishing
Supremacy: The Blood Elves are easy
now... Use Sipphiron and your Battle Cruisers to waltz up the
river to D, a Blood Elf outpost. Theirs 2 Battleships, but
Sipphiron easily destroys them. Have the Battleships knock down
their shipyard and Bombard Coastal towers, Sipphiron takes care of
the Dragon Hawk, while the Battleships frag the enemy land troops.
Sipphiron can then freeze the enemy barracks and destroy the
outpost.
Bring in land troops, expand here as well. Now with two gold
mines, dealing with E is child's play. The Blood Elves will
continue to attack you with Dragon Hawks and Drops, but now at
your expansion at C. Build a few towers there, and you won't have
a problem. Sipphiron can kill a Zeppelin in 2 hits!
Repair your Juggernauts, and build more till you have around 8.
Load a transport filled with Crypt Fiends, another with Meat
Wagons and have them and Sipphiron travel to E. Bombard their
towers with your Juggernauts. Unless the enemy attacks over 6+
Dragonhawks, don't bother unloading the Crypt Fiends. Sipphiron
can handle it with ease. Meanwhile the Juggernauts deal death to
all their coastal structures and units. Unload your ground units
to finish them off. You now control the map.
Completing the Mission: The
passageway at F leads to your final destination, but before you do
so, you may wish to creep G. There's some Polar Bears there, which
your Battleships will destroy. Unload your troops, go up the ramp
on the left and kill the Tuskarr. There's a Giant Penguin, kill
it, get a Ring of Supremacy.
 | | The Level 15 Blue Dragon Spawn may
be tough... but you've got the
numbers. |
Now go back
to F and follow the Red Dotted line till you reach the
destination, With all this gold, your force is really unlimited,
so I won't go through how to defeat the enemies in detail. Though,
at G, you will fight swarms of arachnids, don't underestimate
these guys. You'll want Sipphiron and at least 12 Crypt Fiends if
you wish to survive.
A good idea is to kill the toughest enemy first, and then use your
Wand of Reanimation to bring him your side. When you kill more,
cast Raise Dead, this always works. Meat Wagons are also great
when you start fighting Nerubians who get Raise Dead, or it won't
look pretty.
Notice the detor to H, to get there, you'll need to use Meat
Wagons to blast through the trees. But the reward is well worth
it, a Ring of Protection +4, provided by the Penguin King (who you
don't even need to fight!).
The Nerubians at J are tough, use Meat Wagons to knock down their
Ziggurats so you don't keep spawning more troops. The final
Guardians include a Level 15 Blue Dragon spawn, but with 12 Crypt
Fiends and your huge Bone Dragon... no problem.
