Chapter 3:
The Dark Lady
Difficulty: Very Difficult Heroes:
Sylvanis, Varimathras Significant Items: Staff of Teleportation Side Quests: None |
No matter how skilled you are at the game,
you're going to need a few attempts before you get this level
right... though with our walkthrough, you should be able to make
it in one.
The difficulty here is the vast amount of enemy troops that attack
you, coupled with your lack of units to choose from and your
limited amount of resources. Oh, and of course, they attack you in
two directions, which make it difficult to use any choke points
effectively.
Hero Development Guide: Silvanis
will Rise to level 6.
Silvanis: Level 5: Level 2 Silence, Level 2 Black Arrow,
Level 1 Life Siphon, Level 6: Level 2 Silence, Level 2 Black
Arrow, Level 1 Life Siphon, Charm
It is essential to get Charm at Level 6, the walkthrough assumes
that you do.
General Strategy:
The enemy will attack from two directions, Red from the North,
purple from the East. While you only need to destroy the Red base
to win, it is a good idea to eliminate Purple. By doing so, you
will any need to defend one Choke point, and hence be able to
control the map.
There is an expansion at A, which you may want to expand to quite
soon into the game. It provides additional income and cannot be
attacked, provided your main base guards the choke point at B. The
Gnoll's there also provide good troops for possession.
Once purple is destroyed, you can secure the bridge C, and also
get the Gold mine at D, ensuring victory. The paths in which in
enemy uses to attack you are shown.
Preparation for Attack:
Both purple and red can and will rebuild lost structures,
therefore it is necessary to overwhelm them in one go.
Given that they produce things 50% faster in hard, this is not easy! It is essential that you have 80 supply of troops,
as well as the help of your neutral allies.
 | | By walling your Wagons inside an
enclosed space, you can cause the enemy a great deal a pain as
their abominations try in vain to reach your
siege. |
To build up troops, you'll need to minimis losses. Construct
spirit towers and other structures in such a way that you off the
lower left quadrant of your Hall of the dead. This gives you a
space to place your Meat Wagons, which cannot be easily breached
by enemy Abominations. This allows you to mass up to dozen of
these siege weapons, without them being destroyed.
Purple will assault you with Abominations and Crypt Fiends, use
your Meat Wagons to destroy the aboms, and then flank their Crypt
Fiends from the side with your abominations. Yes, your own, using
Possession from Banshees, maintain 4-6 abominations at all times,
but no more. Mass abominations is not a good idea, as they're
slow, and take ages to actually attack the enemy. A group of more
than 6 will get in each others way.
Red will also attack you, using two different parties. The first
consist of their Level 5 Dread Lord, 2 Meat Wagons, 2 Necros about
half a dozen Abominations. Possess the Aboms (if you don't have
enough), silence their Dread Lord and necros. Use Meat Wagons to
deal the damage.
 | | Silence is essential when against
Necromancers. |
The second party consists about about 3 Meat Wagons and a Dozen
Necros. What they'll do is unload all corpses, and raise nearly 30
skeletons and skeletal mages to attack you. Without a Staff of the
Negation, your best bet is to silence them before they can raise
too many. When they approach your base, destroy them with the Meat
Wagons... who thankfully leave no corpse. And use Silvanis and the
Abominations to kill the Wagons trailing behind.
Meanwhile, execute the following build order:
- 2nd Slaughterhouse
- Upgrade Unholy
Strength
- Build ziggurats to wall of your Meat
Wagons and Haunted Gold mine
- Mass Meat Wagons and
Banshees till you hit 80 supply.
- Meanwhile,
Upgrade Unholy Strength and Armor till you hit Level 3
During this, you may wish to expand. Also pay a visit to E, where
Ogres are attacking some burnt houses. Possess the Ogre
Woundmaster, he's a powerful melee unit with bash, and what's
more, he costs no supply! In fact, all natural creeps cost no
creep when you possess them on this level, allowing you to get a
much bigger army then normal. You'll get the side quest of
possessing the Orc Warlord at F.
The Ogre Warlord: Wait till Red
attack and then spare 3 Banshees, 1 Abomination and Silvanis to do
the job. Run past all of the Ogres, try to kill as few as
possible. You see, all the Ogres join your party once you possess
their leader. Use the Abomination to slow the enemy down. Possess
one Ogre Mage to cast slow on enemy ogres.
 | | Destroying the Barracade is easy,
if you have an Abom taking all the
hits. |
Meanwhile have Silvanis
and the 2 remaining Banshees attack the stone barricade.
Anti-magic Shell your Banshees, charge you, possess the Ogre
Warlord. Once done, all Ogres are yours! The Ogre Mage as
especially useful, keep them alive. Bloodlusted Aboms are quite a
sight.
All your Ogres cost no supply! But not further Ogres your hrie
from the Merc Camp. therefore, keep your Ogres alive! Make sure
you have Statures on auto-heal and keep them back, using them only
for destroying enemy Meat Wagons.
The Bandit Lord: There's more
troops you can control. Before your first Gold Mine runs out,
Silvanis should have raised to Level 6, get Charm. Take her with
one Abomination to G. Use the Abomination to take the hits from
the bandits while they both break open the gates. Run your abom
back before it gets killed, and have Silvanis charge in and Charm
the Bandit Lord. Ignore all attacks, Silvanis will survive with
around 300 hp. Hit the crates here, you can pick up a Ring of
Protection +3.
You n\now have over 24 bandits! The most noteworthy is the Rengade
Mages, who have Level 1 Chain Lightning. Units casting damage
spells are lethal... and with 3 of them, they can deal 360 damage
to any unit... no cooldown, and another 360 within a few seconds.
With these guys, you can level whole armies. I recommend buying
more of them from the Merc Camp, though they cost 4 food, they're
far superior to abominations.
 | | A Scroll of Protection will greatly
improve the success of your battle. |
Destroying Purple:
With all the forces at your disposal, 80
supply, Ogres and Bandits, you've got enough to kill Purple. Wait
for a Red attack, destroy it, and move out all your forces. Aboms
in front, Ogres trailing, Bandits after that, Meat wagons (you
need at least 10) trailing. Also have 5 acolytes on Auto-repair.
On the way, you'll pass a Goblin Merchant. By a Scroll of
Protection, it's invaluable with a force this large. use it in the
next battle.
Lead out enemy forces with a unit, and Charm an oncoming
Abomination... now attack! As your Meat Wagons push forward, make
sure nothing reaches them. Have your Renegade Wizards selected and
Chain Lightning everything in your way. Use there Mana with wild
abandon, they have 500 each, and with 4, that's 20 Chain Lightning
spells. Meanwhile, the Meat Wagons will target the buildings
exclusively. Your units have only one role... to defend the Meat
Wagons at all costs.
Units the Meat wagon to systematic target all production
buildings.. followed by their Black Citadel.. then all acolytes.
Once they're all dead, victory is assured.
While you attack, red will attack your main, don't worry if the
destroy a few buildings, even if they get all of it. The dead
enemy and the gold in more important. Use your acolytes to expand
here.
 | | S\Chain Lightning is
lethal. |
The Strike at Red: Despite your
huge force, most of it would have perished during the fight, and
you'll need to replenish it. While your building up, move your
remaining forces to C (you may have to fight off a few attack
during the journey). Near there, is a fountain of mana, great
rally point for Banshees. However, the place is guarded by a Frost
Wyrm, 2 Crypt Fiends and 2 Gargoyles. Charm the Frost Wyrm, your
units can take care of the rest.
At this bridge, your forces can again take out enemy attack with
easy. Keep your Meat Wagons a good distance back, so that when
enemy strikes, all his forces a clumped on the bridge. With 12
Meat wagons... goodbye force! Then use Bloodlusted Renegade Mages
to take out their Siege. Oh... Chain Lightning helps too.
Meanwhile, keep Silvanis patrolling on perimeter of the enemy
base. From there, you can spot Aboms fathered near their outlying
towers. Charm them, when you can. Then provide a good meat
wall.
Once you have 100 supply of troops, 12 Meat wagons, 4 Aboms, 6
Renegade Mages, 5 Acolyes... attack. Do not charge headlong in,
instead use Charm to lure out enemy forces... right into your line
of Meat Wagons. Chain Lighting everything, Silence their Dread,
focus fire... then proceed for base destruction, you know the
drill.
