Mission 2: A Dark Convenant

Difficulty: Very Difficult
Heroes: Prince Kael, Lady Vashj
Significant Items: Pendent of Energy, Claws of Attack +6, Ring of Regeneration, Staff of Sanctuary
Side Quests: None

This level is extremely hard, you'll be attacked almost constantly. The only way for you to win is to attack and defend at the same time. Finally, its a pain to kill anyone, has you have no siege units at your disposal. All in all, this makes it so that the map will take well over 2 hours.

Hero Development Guide:
Kael will rise to Level 4 on this Level

    Kael:
Level 4: Level 2 Flame Strike, Level 2 Banish
    Lady Vashj:
Level 3: Level 2 Forked Lightning, Level 1 Cold Arrow

The Undead Assault:
There's nothing much you can do here except watch your outlying bases die. Try harvest as much gold as you can be sending peasants from D and E to harvest at B and C. Also flee all your military units to the beaches near I and J. You see, once all of your town halls are destroyed in the outlying bases, there's a trigger that'll move all surviving units directly to A. Therefore keep your guys alive. When the Undead reaches bases B and C, flee the peasants to I and J as well.

Meanwhile, starting building defences at A. Upgrade your Scout Tower to a Guard Tower and Build 3 More. Build a second Gryphon Aviary and use remaining gold to Train Dragon Hawks. Do not try to save your outlying bases, it is futile. Once the bases die, the Naga will come in to save the day...

Cloud the Towers, Cyclone the Aboms, Parasite what's left, and your Naga Warriors will smite the rest.

Securing your Economy:
With the Naga in your army, you need to secure a mine. Base B is the easiest to take out. Keep your Priests, Sorceress and Kael at home base for defence, and use the Naga Force to strike at B. Get two Dragon Hawks, cast Cloud over their Spirit Towers. Summon a Sea Elemental using your Royal Guard and attack. With Parasites, Frost Armor and Crushing Wave, their defences will die with ease. Destroy the crates near the gold mine to pick up Gold and a Tiny Castle. Use it on the Mine and transport some peasants over. Get 3 Guard Towers to defend the base at bridge K.

I need not remind you that your Naga force is irreplaceable! Use them carefully, and try especially hard to keep your Royal Guard alive. He is the only you have that deals decent damage to enemy buildings! Purchase a staff of sanctuary for the Sea Witch, and use it on your Nagas if they're low on Life.

Your Royal Guard must survive, he's the only unit that you'll get which can do significant damage to buildings. Keep him hotkeyed under a group just as you would a hero, because hell, he's better than your heroes! Use Staff of Sanctuary on him whenever he gets dangerously low on health.

The vast majority of the enemy attacks will concentrate on A, so you should focus all of your defences there. There'll be very scattered attacks on your expansion, which you can take care off with Towers, and Dragon Hawks. On the other hand, the main base will be attacked nonstop. You'll want to get about 12 towers ASAP, including 2 Cannon Towers in the front to take the hits.

Purple attacks it with 2 Meat Wagons, 6 Banshees, 2 Aboms, and about 6 Necromancers. Priests are helpful here. Use Flamestrike to destroy enemy Meat Wagons and Casters. Whatever you do, do not engage purple with your Myrmidons, you do not want them possessed!

Remember, Flamestrike doesn't hurt air.

Orange attacks using 8-10 Crypt Fiends, supported by a Meat Wagon and several Necromancers. Flamestrike again does the trick.

Green has two different attacks. the first is a purely aerial fleet of 2 Frost Wyrms, 8-10 Gargoyles, and 4 Destroyers. Your best chance is to get an fleet of 10 Dragon Hawks and hover behind your Guard Towers. When the enemy comes, the Gargoyles will target your towers. This gives you the opportunity to aerial shackle all their units except the destroyers. Your towers are then free to make short work of them. However, do not try to engage this force with just your Dragonhawks, even if you have 16! With Destroyers, who're immune to magic, it just doesn't work! Also, during these battles, you may wish to turn Gameplay Speed down to slowest, allowing you to shackle them before they reach you.

The second attack is basically ground, which they drop off at H. This one contains 7-8 Abominations, a few Crypt Fiends and their Level 7 Dread Lord. All supported by 2 Destroyers. Again don't try to take this out without towers. Use Flamestrike to weaken the enemy, and Banish to disable the Dread Lord. The Dragons are great at focusing on the enemy Infernal.

When you get a brief reprieve, use your Nagas and 2 Dragon Hawks to take out C. The exact same technique as B. Destroy nearby crates to find Gold and a Tiny Castle, and get another expansion. Again, four towers for defences are adequate

Defensive Tactics
Here's where your Myrmidon become extremely useful. They can Ensnare enemy Barges while they're in water! This means, once you've destroyed a Barge, all of their inhabitants die!

Station a submerged Myrmidons at each of the locations N, O and P. Keep a lookout for incoming colored dots on the minimap. If they're barges, unsubmerge, ensnare it. Send a Dragon hawk and together, you can kick the Barge. Beats fighting off Dozens of units any day. This frees your Dragon Hawks to help offensive for most of the time, only having to fly back to defend against the Aerial Assaults.

Destroying the Supporting Dead:
Now its time to destroy the supporting undead bases at D and E. I recommend E first as it is slightly easier. As the techniques for sieving both bases are exactly the same, I'll go through on in detail and assume you do the same for the other.

As your Cannon Towers attack the Purple Base, their troops will charge out and die.

While the defences of each are not strong, the catch is that you can't spare much to siege them with either. Kael should be there as well. That leaves you with about 2 spare Hawks, your Naga Toyal Guard, and Lady Vashj. Throw in 1-2 priests, and there's your attack force.

Without siege units... your best method of destroying a base is Cannon Towers. (Unfortunate no?). Build two Arcane Vaults at K and stock up your Naga Sea Witch with Ivory Towers. This provides almost instant scout towers at a cheap price. Hire a Mechanical Critter to scout out your target. Now using Ivory Towers, quickly erect a row of 5 Cannon Towers outside the enemy base, just out of the range of the enemy Spirit Tower. When your towers are built, they'll attack the Spirit Tower and kill it (Cannon Towers outrange all other towers). Enemy defences will pour out... but not too many. Aerial bind the Frost Wyrm to kill it, use Sea Elementals to take the hits, and Crushing Wave on the Ghouls... Your Cannon towers can then destroy their towers. Buy 5 more Ivory Towers and erect them in within range of key enemy structures, upgrade 3 to Cannon and 2 to Guard... Remember to Sanctuary your Royal Guard if he gets hurt too much. Repeat this process with five more Ivory Towers to get a further foothold on tier base. With cannon towers doing over 100 siege damage, their base will fall. Expand here. Rinse and repeat for the other base at D.

During all this time, it is essential for you to pay attention to the enemy map. Your Myrmidons must Ensnare and Intercept as many Transports as possible.

Overwhelming Green:
Green is exceptionally hard to destroy... begin by plant dozens of towers outside the North of their base. Both Guard and Cannon Towers. You have 4 mines.. do not be afraid to use your resources. Get a a line of at least 18 towers outside their ramp, with a 70/30 ratio of Cannon/Guard Towers. Build 4 Barracks to pump out archers. Meanwhile, Green will continue to attack you, and hence you'll need to keep your Dragonhawks available for dealing with their assaults. They may however, switch to attacking your expansion at E. If they do, you'll need to build some extra guard towers there against air (you should have more than enough cannon towers left from taking over the base). Now train up to 80 supply of Archers. Stock the Sea Witch's Inventory full with 5 towers.

Green will assault your towers constantly with all they've got, and does Green build fast! The key is to lead enemy units away from the towers that your building to the row of towers behind thats well established. The Battle is Chaotic!

Lead out an enemy attack by hitting their Nerubian Tower... When then comes out. Use the Archers to focus fire of the Black Sphinxes. Spare 2 Dragons Hawks to cast Aerial Binding on the Frost Wyrms. Your peons will have higher priority than the towers, have them lead the Dread Lord around in Circles. Also Banish their Abominations, followed by Forked Lighting. If you still have your Royal Guard, Frost Bolt comes in handy for stunning the Dread Lord.

As soon as you defeat the attack, replace lost units with Archers. Cloud the enemy Nerubian and Spirt Towers and use your Ivory Towers to put up 3 Cannon and 2 Guard Towers. More enemy units with charge out... defend your towers with all you've got. try to lead them back with your Archers into your 18 Towers.. this is the hardest part. Once the Cannons Towers are built... they can take care of surrounding structures. Fortify them with more towers.

You'll have to repeat the above procedure for every half screen of land... the Cannon towers are your decent siege weapon. Good luck! But before you destroy the base completely.. there's a few things you should do.

Tying up loose ends:
You know have lots of gold, and a huge army, so creeping won't be a problem. Make sure to creep the following:

Storm Wyrm at I: Drops a Pendent of Mana.
Level 10 Hydra at L: Use Flamestrike to destroy the Rock Barrier to get to the Hydra. It gives a Mana Stone, a Ring of Regeneration and a Tome of Agility +2.
Level 6 Troll at M: Drops Claws of Attack +6

Go kill the last Green building, you're done!

Mission Secrets
1. At the very top right of the map, there is a little section cut off by trees from the rest of the land (get to it by boat is easiest), inside are a some Lightning Lizard's and a Storm Wyrm.

2. At the bottom left of the map in the water, there is a line of Rock Chunks you can break through to find yourself a level 10 Ancient Hydra which drops some nice loot. Walkthrough Index
