Mission 6: Shards of the Alliance

Difficulty: Hard
Heroes: Maive, Tyrande
Significant Items: Ring of Protection +3
Side Quests: Night Elf Fleet

This Mission is very much like 'Defend the Kodos' in Mission 2 of the Vanilla Orc Campaign. In fact, it almost sounds like they used the same voice actor. You must escort a weak human force, led but a stupid Blood Mage who flame strikes his own troops... through a maze of undead.

Hero Development Guide:
Maive will rise to Level 8 on this Level

    Maive:
Level 8: Level 3 Fan of Knives, Level 3 Blink, Level 1 Shadow Strike Spirit of Vengeance

General Guide:
Unlike previous missions where you start with a limited amount of troops, taking this mission nice and slowly will not be to your advantage, Every minute or so, enemy troops consisting of 6 ghouls, 1 abomination and 1 banshee will materialize and attack the supply Wagons. While you may be able to take out this force unscathed, Prince Kael has a tendency to hit his own men with Flamestrike.. and you need everything you've got. Proceed with a balance of haste and caution.

1. Keep a Avatar of Vengeance out all all times. After a battle, use the spirits to scout and kill key troops (such as Necromancers).

Montain Giants can mess up enemy Melee units.. bigtime.

2. Your Staff of Negation is the key to countering Necros.

3. Keep your bears with the Supply Wagons, and don't use them as melee units. They don't last long and server much better as casters.

4. Mountain Giants are great are keeping your troops alive, especially against melee units. In combat, space the two giants apart and have one Taunt, followed by the other. Melee units with rush back and forth between the two, while getting slaughtered by Fan of Knives.

5. Rejuvenation + Mountain Giants make a great combo.

6. Maive's Blink is excellent for Defending the Wagons. Use her to reinforce weak spots first. She's great at taking out the 6 ghouls that periodically appear.

The First League:
The first league is comparatively easy, obstacles you will face are:

A. Slight more than a Dozen Ghouls, Mountain Giants can soak up the damage, and Fan of Knives will destroy them. Send resulting spirits to B.

B. Kael has stored stashes of gold and items in three locations on this level, B, C and E. Too bad he decides to stash them exactly where the undead are. This stash is guarded by 4 Necros, a Meat Wagon, and some Aboms. Kill the Wagon with your Spirits. Engage Necros with your Warden, dispel skeletons. With roar and giants, this should be easy. Destroy the Slaughterhouse for a Ring of Protection +3. Get the Gold.

At this point, you can hire some Mercs. I recovered the Troll Priests, you need the extra healing. As you proceed to C, you'll meet more Aboms and Ghouls, Fan of Knives + Focus fire through them.

The Staff of Negation is the key to defeating Necros.

C. Guarding the second stash are half a dozen Necromancers, a few Abominations and 3 graveyards. If you engage, they'll raise skeletons like crazy. Charge you with the Warden First, they'll raise the skeles. Use your Staff to dispel them and follow up with Starfall. have rejuvenation on your Warden... they're quite dead. Use the stash money to hire a Goblin Taskmaster and two Geomancers. Command aura is godly.

K. Wait for Starfall to regenerate before you proceed. The road along K is filled with Crypt Fiends, use Starfall to Destroy them, (Fan of Knives help too).

At D you will reach the a cross road. Now you can either take the long route, or go through an undead base. I recommend the long route, on Hard difficulty, you never want to go through a base!

The Long Route
Before you proceed, collect some gold from you last stash at E. Don't go down there with you whole force. Just use your Warden to Blink in, take the Gold, and Blink out. No need to engage anyone.

Now proceed through F, fight more dead, and collect your forces at G. This is a tough battle. Blink in using the Warden, and eliminate the Dread Lord. Fan of Knives + a Avatar of Vengeance should do it.

Once he's dead, send in the rest of your forces, you may now starfall. Rejuvenate your Mountain Giants and have them soak the damage. Remember to grab some tree trunks when you demolish enemy towers.

At H, you'll engage about 8 Gargoyles and a Frost Wyrm. Focus fire on the Frost Wyrm, the rest does little damage. Rejuvenate whoever the Dragon is attacking. Once it's dead, dispatch the Gargoyles.

There's a Goblin Shop at I, guarded by Bandits. Kill the bandits, get their gold. You should have 800 to fill up Tyrande's empty inventory. Spend all of it on Scrolls of Healing and Protection... remember, gold does not carry onto the next mission, but items do. Now proceed to J... Make sure that you have Starfall read before you reach it!

The final battle is very Chaotic, but with Starfall, you'll win.

The Final Battle
When you reach J... the undead gathers for a final assault on your Wagons. That;s why it's essential you can cast Starfall. Move Tyrande right into the middle of the Supply Wagons and activate her ultimate spell.

Meanwhile, have the rest of your force ringed around the wagons. Provided Starfall is maintained, the enemy will perish. Use Taint to get enemy ghouls and Aboms to run circles. Provided you've retained a bear, your Mountain Giants and Kael still has about 8 men left, you'll be able to do it.

Mission Secrets -By Chib
1. When you reach the first village (not the one you start in), just past the last top building, there is a small path cut into the trees that leads up to three crates.

2. When the path that you're following takes a turn and you start heading Northwest, about two screen's width up the path, you can look down over the cliff/rocky area and see a crate. Blink to it, destroy it and collect an Orb of Fire.

3. If you choose to take the long path (or simply walk up there), when you get to the top left and start heading back down and around again, look out for a small path leading South through the trees, walk down it, and you can then Blink left over the cliff to another small path which leads to a camp. Destroy the crates for a Talisman of Evasion.

4. To the right of the Goblin Merchant (the long path), you can see some trees cut down, you can Blink in there. Walk downwards to find a Bandit Lord, he drops some very nice things (Rune of Restoration, Claws of Attack +12).

5. From inside the last secret, you can walk up and right to the edge of the river. Blink down onto the lower cliff. Now Blink over the river on to the other bank, then Blink up the river twice and finally Blink back over the river to find a crate with a Boots of Quel'Thalas +6 in them. Walkthrough Index
