Map of the Week: FPS Smash TV v1.0 - Deathwing @ 20:01:41 EST
In Map of the Week is decided on many elements, sometimes we select one based on its fun factor, sometimes based on its lasting appeal, but this week, we commend a map for its innovation.

FPS Smash TV is a third person action scenario based on the 1991 game, Smashtv, but Acclaim Entertainment. A party of 5 players venture from arena to arena, destroying monsters from petty ghouls to big bosses. So what makes this game unique? It's a shooter!

Complete Keyboard Control, the ability to miss enemies, and to deal splash damage makes this map truly unique. Unlike the RTS Engine, you actually have to aim, and nothing more satisfying in destroying four spiders in a single blow.

Try it out here.

Got a Scenario? Be sure to send it in. Other great maps can be found in our archive.

Map Hackers Banned Permanently - Deathwing @ 19:05:58 EST

A lot of people have been complaining that Blizzard hasn't done much lately to punish hackers, so here's some nice action:

Keeping with Blizzard's aggressive stance against hacks and cheats, they have permanently disabled 1,000 CD keys from ladder play on Battle.net, resulting in the permanent closure of approximately 2,000 accounts that were tied to those CD-Keys. Blizzard has also permanently closed 27,000 additional accounts and disabled 16,000 CD keys from ladder play for one month. These accounts were determined to have used a hack or cheat program while playing Warcraft III on Battle.net. In the case of the CD keys that were banned, at least one account tied to each CD key was identified as having used such a program while playing on Battle.net.

Yes, you heard right! 1000 people will not be able to play Warcraft 3 ever again on Ladder due to hacking, and it serves them right. I hope that'll make others reconsider before downloading a third party program, and those 16,000 others who got a temporary ban, I hope they catch the drift. Kudos to Dlplayer for the news.

Warcraft V1.05 Released - Deathwing @ 17:56:50 EST
Don't get too excited... actually, don't get excited at all. This patch has no balance changes whatsoever, In fact, it only has one change:

- Fixed a problem with viewing certain replays.

What's worse is that V1.05 will make all previous replays incompatible! So I gotta ask, what's the point of this patch?

Well there's a few things, the patch is most likely a prepary patch for the Ice Throne Beta. This way, user's will be able to log on and see people with their cool Ice Throne Icons on Battle.net. In addition, it may include some core datafile changes, so that a balance change applied to Ice Throne can be easily applied to original Warcraft 3.

CGW Wa3 Exp Preview Reveals Secrets - Deathwing @ 20:17:01 EST
Infoceptor has recieved froms everal independent sources that in the latest issue of the Computer Gaming World magazine, there features a preview on Warcraft 3 that reveals many abilities in regards to the Warcraft 3 units. First of all, we would like to urge anyone who subscribes to the magazine to send us a scan! Now onto the goodies:

    Heroes:

    Night Elf Warden:

  • Blink - Teleports to a Location on the same screen.
  • Fan of Knives - Sends Knives in all directions, doing some damage.
  • A Passive Ultimate Skill.
  • Originally Assassin that was dropped during War3 Development

    Alliance Blood Mage:

  • Banish - Target cannot be hurt for duration of spell (increases with level).  Target can also not deal damage.
  • Flame Strike - Area of Attack Damage Spell
  • Mana Flare - Weakened Area of Effect mana Burn
  • Mark of Fire (Ultimate) - Turns Friendly Unit into a Fire Demon.

    Troll Shadow Hunter:

  • Hex - Turns an enemy unit into a random critter for a limited duration.
  • Healing Wave - Reverse of Chain Lightning, heals around twice as much hp as Chain Lightning damages.
  • Guardian - Originally Tier 3 Spell of Troll Head Hunters. Sets up a fire spewing serpent that attacks enemies.
  • Ultimate (Unamed) - A Channelling Spell that causes all units within a certain radius except the Shadow Hunter to be invincible for a limited duration. While the spell is in effect, the Shadow Hunter may not move or attack. Though this may seem powerful, it's actually not, most players target the hero anyway. I prefer Starfall.

    Undead Crypt Lord:

  • Impale - Target Unit is Damaged and Knocked Backwards

  • Thorn Shield - Unit Burrows into the Ground and send lines of spikes at enemies (think Lurker). In this state, the hero is invisible except when he attacks (think Shade Wolves)
  • Locust Swarm - Target Units Recieve Costant Damage for a Duration.
  • Units:

    • Crypt Fiends gain burrow ability, much as the Hydralisk in Starcraft. While Burrowed, fiends on invisible to all but air units, but cannot attack or move.
    • Necromancers can raise skeletal mages

    Items:

    • Early Healing Items will be available for Orcs to compensate Grunt Healing.
    • Night Elves have Moon Stones than can change the time of day to night.

While the information here is not 100% confirmed, it has been gathered from several sources. We would like to thank TerrorNova, Bahamut_Zero, Death Hawk and Js2 for their contributions.

The last of the above contributors has also started a thread. Discuss here.

Warcraft 3 Expansion Detailed Announced? - Deathwing @ 18:47:49 EST
Computer Games.ro has managed to get hold of (or made up) details on Blizzard's Warcraft 3 Expansion. If they're correct, then we're in for hell of a treat! We recount the features below:

Following in the tradition of previous Blizzard expansion sets, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne provides gamers with a vast new chapter in the epic Warcraft saga. In the single-player campaign, players revisit the war-torn world of Azeroth. Several months have passed since Archimonde and the Burning Legion were defeated at the battle of Mount Hyjal, yet a new threat has arisen throughout the land. The evil Lich King Ner'zhul has been imprisoned inside the Icecrown glacier, deep within the arctic continent of Northrend. Although the former Orc Shaman lacks physical form, his soul lives on, forever seeking a means to escape his icy prison. As the saga continues, it is revealed that both the Night Elf renegade, llidan, and the traitorous Death Knight, Arthas, seek he Icecrown glacier and the mysterious powers found inside. While it is uncertain as to what is being sought inside the icy tomb, players must traverse uncharted lands and battle treacherous new enemies to uncover the schemes of these nefarious beings, and save all of Azeroth from the forces of darkness.

    Key features include:
    * One new Hero per race, each possessing powerful spells and magical abilities specifically designed to enhance each race
    * A host of new units, each equipped with new abilities and spells, giving players the opportunity to create diverse strategic and
    tactical forms of combat
    * 3 new tilesets featuring extraordinary new lands to explore, complete with numerous creeps and critters to wage war upon
    * Player-built shops, unique for each race, equipped with items carefully designed to improve and aid the units of every race
    * Neutral buildings, which will provide players with numerous new upgrades, items and abilities
    * Neutral Heroes, available for recruitment by all players, that can supplement and strengthen a player's army with all new spells and
    abilities
    * An advanced world editor that allows players to create their own custom campaigns, complete with cut-scenes and voiceovers
    * Many new multiplayer maps
    * Expanded multiplayer options over Battle.net® including multiple new game types, clan and tournament support

The game is currently slated for a summer 2003 release. Now is this a hoax? The writing style does seem official, but we've heard nothing from Blizzard themselves. If it is true though, we can expect Blizzard revive the heroes that they've dumped during the development of Warcraft 3. That is

Human: Elven Ranger, warrior hero armed with Frozen Arrow, Stunning Arrow some passive ability and Death Arrow as the ultimate.

Night Elves: Night Elf Assassin, cunning hero, armed with Blink (short ranged teleportation) and other spells, or the Arch-Druid.

Orcs: Troll Warlord, Cunning Hero, armed with invisibility wards amoung other spells.

Possibilities, speculations, anything interesting? Discuss it! Read the complete article here.

Kudos to Doc Sketchers for the news.

A new week. a new poll. Without delay, here are the results to the current one:

Which Blizzard game are you playing the most now?
    Warcraft 3   691   66%
    Diablo II   115   11%
    Starcraft    218   21%
    War2 BNE   11   1%
    Diablo   9   1%

    TOTAL

    1044

    100 %
    ..

As one would almost expect, Warcraft 3 is obviously the most popular Blizzard game right. However, despite the fact that it is nearly five years newer than Starcraft, and the same time of game, Blizzard's previous RTS is still going strong. It's great to see that Starcraft is still alive, and more alive than Diablo 2.

It seems that Blizzard RTS gener outslive their RPGs, as the same case happened five years ago, when Warcraft 2 surpassed the popularity of Diablo.

Top 10 Most Popular Games - Spider @ 13:30:05 EST
According to IGNPC, the top 10 most popular games are as follows:
      1. StarCraft
      2. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
      3. Half-Life
      4. The Sims
      5. StarCraft: Brood War
      6. Diablo II
      7. Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
      8. Unreal Tournament
      9. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
      10. Roller Coaster Tycoon

As you can see...Blizzard games dominate the list. It's surprising, even Half-Life got knocked into 3rd place! It goes to show you what hard work, dedication and constant delays *smirk* will get you. Haha...good job Blizzard!

More Realm Updates! - Spider @ 9:25:03 EST
Blizzard has been furiously working at fixing the Realms, and have partly succeeded in eliminating the problem.

The USWest Diablo II realm is back online, and new character creation has been enabled.

The Europe and Asia2 realms are still in progress.

The USEast realm was taken offline at approximately 1000 Friday January 17 UTC (5:00 A.M. EST). Our apologies for the lack of notice... due to the length of time involved, we wanted to start this process as soon as possible. Again, this process is expected to take up to 24 hours.

The Asia and Asia3 realms will be taken offline shortly after the Asia2 realm completes. Another notice will be posted with specific times.

Again, we have to congratulate Blizzard for attacking the problem so quickly! Good job on their part.

More information will be revealed as the game comes closer to release. You'll see new things revealed on the web site, Previews, Interviews, and FAQ/Web Site Updates. Usually it's very slow in the beginning then it picks up toward the
beta and especially after the beta comes out.

Some companies are telling people all about their game from the start. I'm sure you've noticed this is not something Blizzard does. Why? :

*It's far too early to discuss major things when they have not been nailed down. They could or could not be a part of a game. It's bad to talk about some cool new feature than have to turn around and say it's not going to be in the gam e (Guild Halls - Diablo II). This is happening quite often with those companies that are very open with their game creation. This sets up a pattern of disappointment with gamers. They hear about a cool thing then later on hear it was
cut. If the company would have waited until they knew for sure something was going to be in, they wouldn't have any problems but now they have their fans questioning whether anything they talk about will action happen. Sometimes you plan everything and something is still cut like the Ranger in Warcraft III. But you can still try to do your best to only talk about things that you are pretty sure are going to make it.

*You don't want to talk about cool ideas if you are unable to put them in. At the beginning there are all sorts of cool ideas but those ideas are cut down to a workable plan given the development cycle. Every game has tons of cool things that
could have been in game if there had been more time such as neutral units and observation mode in StarCraft or Guild Halls, Chat Room Trading or Arenas in Diablo II.

*Taking Ideas. Game companies commonly take cool ideas they see in other people's games especially by popular and well selling companies. If a feature is announced too early other companies might take that idea and put it in their
game making your game less unique and original. That is why some of the biggest things
are revealed right before release or beta. Sometimes they are even able to take an idea and put it in their game and release it
before your game which makes you look like you took it from them. I’ve seen this happen a lot.
Companies have to and should protect their ideas until the risk is less that the ideas can be taken and put into competing games in
    time.

Blizzard is very tight on information. Since I’ve come here with the goal of bridging the gap
between the fans in 1997, I’ve been able to help open up and make more information
available. I mean before I started posting in the forums there wasn’t even a lot of Blizzard forum posts either. This policy is not going to change so people will just have to accept that while other companies may have a more open policy with information, Blizzard isn’t going to start doing the same thing.

So those are some of the reasons why information is limited at this time. More information will be revealed. It sucks waiting for news, but keep in mind that we'reworking for you to get the developers to reveal more information and
    passing along feedback.

Very interesting. Perhaps a lack of information is indeed a good idea. This seems to be the cause of WarCraft III's somewhat meager success. Most people expected too much, and in the end, they were disappointed.

    Realm Updates - Spider @ 18:17:35 EST
Extensive work had to be done on the Realms today, seeing as a number of them went down.

In order to address the missing character issues some users have experienced, extended realm maintenance is required. Each realm will be taken offline for approximately 24 hours, but not all simultaneously. The schedule for the first round of realm maintenance is:

The USWest realm will be unavailable until approximately 1800 Friday, January 17 UTC (10:00 A.M. PST).

The Asia2 realm will be unavailable starting 2230 Thursday, January 16 UTC (0730 Friday, January 17 KST) for approximately 24 hours.

The Europe realm will be unavailable starting 0100 Friday, January 17 UTC for approximately 24 hours.

NOTE: If you have previously created a character on a realm that is not offline for maintenance, you can play that character. If you do not have such a character, you can play Open Battle.net games. To access Open Battle.net: select "Other Multiplayer" from the main Diablo II menu, and then select "Open Battle.net". You should login with your usual Battle.net account. The game will then ask you to create a new character (which is stored locally on your system, rather than on Battle.net).

    -The Battle.net Team

Players (depending on the Realm) should be able to resume their gaming very soon. Hats off to Blizzard for attending to the problem so quickly! We really do appreciate it.

Diablo II Character problems - Spider @ 7:59:28 EST
Battle.net seems to be undergoing problems at the moment when it comes to Diablo II characters.

Some Diablo II characters are temporarily unavailable. Symptoms are a blank character list after logging into Battle.net or a "Player Not Found" message after selecting a character. The Battle.net Team is working to resolve this issue.

    -The Battle.net Team

Blizzard has even gone so far as to disable character creation and take the USWest realm down. Check out the rest of the annoucements at Battle.net. As to what is causing the problem, is uncertain at this point. Hopefully Blizzard will keep us updated.

Down with Hacking? Down with Realms... - Spider @ 12:39:22 EST
While most gamers in the Blizzard community are honest players, there are always those individuals who feel a need to cheat. Whether intentional or not, Battle.net now boots those who feel that they need to hack while playing on the Realms. Here is the official statement:

It has come to our attention that some players may be experiencing technical difficulties while using Diablo II or Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Players have reported that their service will suddenly become interrupted during game play, showing the message "Connection Interrupted." Players are then unable to log back on to the Battle.net servers as they receive the message "Realm Down."

Our Battle.net team has determined that these messages may appear as a result of players using "add-on programs." We suggest that users refrain from using any sort of "add-ons" or run any other programs while playing Diablo II or any of our other games, as they are not supported and can cause undocumented problems while playing on Battle.net.

These programs include utilities such as "map-hacks" and many other different programs that can alter or "enhance" game play. Please note that we do not encourage the use of map-hacks or any other type of hacking utilities; and we are unable to assist players who are affected when using these types of programs.

    Blizzard Entertainment

If you're one of those people running backround programs to assist you in your gameplay, you will most likely experience technical problems which will boot you from the Realms. But, if you're one of us honest gamers, then this really shouldn't apply.

Gamespot complete Interview Summary - Deathwing @ 21:45:51 EST
Just a couple of hours ago, Spider reported that Gamespot has published a video interview with Blizzard in regards to Starcraft: Ghost. Though it's not public access, Medieval Dragon has kindly provided a summary!

The bottomline of this interview focus in the long process taken by Blizzard to develop the ideas and the storyline of the game for nearly 2 years before they could find a partner like Nihilistic to make it happen. That give us an estimate of a year or 2 that Nihilistic has been designing the 3D models with help of both, Blizzard Art Director and the Creative Director at Nihilistic Headquarters at Novato, California. We may assume that Blizzard have dedicated nearly 4 years to this project. Somewhere in the interview some hint was thrown in about how Blizzard

Blizzard to be owned by Microsoft? - Deathwing @ 17:21:31 EST

According to the The Adrenaline Vault, Vivendi, the owner of Blizzard Entertainment is again trying to sell their games unit in order to pay for their massive debts. The artical is as follows:

Vivendi hasn't stopped trying to sell its video game parts after all. The struggling company is looking to sell its biggest moneymakers - Blizzard and Sierra. Both companies are responsible for creating some of the best selling games of all time. Reuters reports that Vivendi has looked to three different potential buyers so far - Microsoft and Electronic Arts as well as Japanese games giant Sony. The deal is for all of Vivendi Universal Entertainment and not simply the two gaming companies. Vivendi Universal Entertainment also owns assets in television and film as well as theme parks. The proposed deal is for $15 billion. An EA spokesperson said the company wouldn't discuss the matter "prior to the announcement of an agreement" while spokespersons from the other companies declined comment.

Interesting, but let us pray that Blizzard does not fall into the hands of Microsoft! Kudos to Cameron Sutherland for the news.

New Strategy: Massing and Mixing - Deathwing @ 20:01:53 EST
Talented Warcraft 3 Player, Nightmyre, has published another of his excellent strategy guides for you. This week, he talks about the advantages of massing and mixing your units.

So I log onto the forum, right? And what do I see? Yet another thread about mass casters, mass dryads, mass this, mass that, mass everything. Seems to be that everyone loves to mass now don't they? And then I go on bnet, and I hear people complaining that "mixing + micro should be > massing". Sounds jolly, as Chib would say. But, the fact of the matter is, mixing and massing are two fundamental concepts which almost everyone manages to get wrong.

Once again, you'll find the knowledge very useful:

NEWS FOR Saturday, January 4, 2003

    New Poll - Deathwing @ 19:37:52 EST
Well, nothing much has happened in the community lately, and it has been a long time since Blizzard made some balance changes to Warcraft 3. So, all we can do for the game is to publish some useful and effective strategies. In this week's poll, we ask you how useful you find these publications, are you one who reads them all? Or someone who plays only custom or singleplayer games, and find little use for them?

    Poll Results - Deathwing @ 19:33:36 EST
Ah, it's that time of the week again. Here's the results of the previous poll:

In Warcraft 3, Which race has the best Innate Defense?
    Human: Militia   147   20%
    Orc: Burrows   133   18%
    Undead: SuperTowers   271   37%
    Night Elf: Healing   125   17%
    Wha?   53   7%

    TOTAL

    729

    100 %
    ..

Interesting. Though supertowers do not come into blow till tier 2, it appears that the general concensus in that these are definately the most powerful form of natural defence. And why not? They deal great damage, possess great life, and unlike the defence of other races, don't require sacrificing your economy. Now that most undead players quick tech to tier 2, they are perhaps the most difficult race to rush.

    Warcraft 3: A FPS? - Deathwing @ 18:09:40 EST
For those few of you unacquanted with the term, FPS is the acronym for First Person Shooter. So what does this have to do with Warcraft 3? The team at W3Campaigns has developed a mod for Warcraft 3 that turns it into a first person shooter.

Do get your expectations too high, it's not Unreal Tournament 2003 or anything like that, the Warcraft 3 Engine was not designed for an highly powerful FPS. However, the basics are there, including mouse view, strafing, and all your usual FPS controls. Be sure to give it a try.

While this may not be much, it marks the way for more advannced mods, that can turn Warcraft 3 into a RTS/FPS hybrid.

    New Strategy: Pre/Post Battle - Deathwing @ 17:47:49 EST
Nightmyre has published another useful Warcraft 3 strategy at Infoceptor. This one deals with the often neglected art of what to do before and after battles:

Frequently players tend to focus far too much on the actual battle. I see some incredible feats of micromanaging in battle, but still manage to pull out after inflicting some damage, be it hero killing, opportunity shots, or something. Once a major battle occurs, and most of our armies are decimated, the game has almost been decided in my favor though. Because, very few people are effective at preparing for a battle and recovering from a loss or capitalizing on a win.

Sounds interesting? Give it a read:
